Proposal for organising two volunteering activities for people surviving in adverse conditions

Introduction

Every year in Hong Kong, families gather to celebrate Christmas, one of the most important events in the whole world. However, many children living in subdivided units do not receive gifts. Also, many homeless people are alone and have no friends or families to share their joy with. For these people, Christmas is often a sad and hard time. This proposal aims to suggest to the Student Council to organise two volunteer activities to raise students' awareness of serving the underprivileged and people living in adverse conditions.

Books donation

A survey of children living in the subdivided unit revealed that their parents cannot afford the cost of gifts. Our school library is full of easy-to-read books and the kids can read them. Instead of keeping these books, it would be more mutually beneficial to donate them to the children. Our library can be replenished with new books and the poor kids receive the books as Christmas presents. To facilitate the donation of books, students may donate their books and put them in the donation box. On 25 December, the participating students should be split into two teams and go to Yau Tsim Mong district and Sham Shui Po district respectively.

Each child should choose only one book from the donation box.

Sharing turkeys

Turkey is considered one of the Christmas foods because it is affordable and large enough. During the Christmas season, meal prices go up. It is also a winter festival, so the homeless who cannot afford meals are left to freeze and starve. The Lord's Prayer says: "Give us this day our daily bread". It is time that we give warmth and meals to the homeless. To facilitate the sharing of the turkeys, the participating students should find the recipe for turkey making and work with the school canteen. After the turkeys are cooked, they will be distributed in 500 boxes. On 25 December, the student council should divide the students into two groups. The first group will go to Sham Shui Po and the second group will go to Yau Tsim Mong. Each homeless person can only get one box.

Conclusion

It is important to feel loved and cared for. Fortunately, many caring people in Hong Kong are willing to lend a helping hand. I am confident that serving poor children and homeless people would be a great opportunity for our students to support a worthy cause. We hope our proposal meets with your approval.
